INTRODUCTIONJovial January has been a month of happiness all around. It is the time when our students welcomed the new year with new promises and resolutions after the winter break. January has been another month of learning and revising the concepts with the maximum participation in different activities like Intra and Inter-School competitions, which not only honed their skills but also gave them a platform to showcase their talents. The universal theme ‘I am truthful’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being truthful and honest could be inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions promising to be truthful and dedicated always. The students commenced CT lessons with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE and sharing numerous facts and regular updates about various important events like Republic Day and other competitions. MATHEMATICSComparing Quantities: With the help of real-life situations, students were introduced to the application of percentages like simple interest and compound interest. Students enacted as lender and borrower in pairs and showed the transaction of money on a certain rate and for a certain period to implicate the concept of interest in real life and thus derived formulas for simple interest and compound interest. In addition, they understood how compounded rates can be different when applied in different amounts of time. Students solved many real-life problems on the same. Mensuration Few intriguing questions of perimeter and area enabled students to recapitulate the formulas learnt in previous classes. To make sure that every student can understand the application of formulas, an oral quiz was conducted for the various formulas for plane figures like rectangles, squares, parallelograms and triangles. Also, students understood the “divide problem into parts method” to find the area of various shapes like:
SCIENCEPhysics: Light: Looking back at several real-life examples experienced by students in their life, they understood the concept of ‘Multiple Reflections’. In addition, students also understood the formulae to find out the number of images when two mirrors are placed at some angles. “Knowledge sharing is the ultimate form of learning.” Two peer educators “Shambahvi Bhardwaj and Shreeya Dixit” beautifully explained the concept of Kaleidoscope to their peers and showed the real-life application of the device in several areas. They used an actual device to show the working. In continuation, they understood the dispersion of white light into seven colours “VIBGYOR” using a scale, spectacles and other lens material. They were able to relate to real and natural dispersion of light as “RAINBOW” and also cited examples like Newton’s Disc and CD-Disk. “EYE IS A VERY PRECIOUS PART OF OUR BODY.” With the help of a diagram, students understood the structure of the eye and were able to understand its parts and their functions. Chemistry: - The chapter, ‘Combustion and Flame’ was continued this month also. They were shown a small demonstration activity on the burning of coal pieces and candles. They observed that candle burns with a flame and coal does not burn the flame. Later, the video on different types of flames produced by different combustible materials like kerosene, LPG gas, CNG gas, and a candle was shown to them. They observed and listed different colours of the flame produced by the above-listed materials. They concluded that liquid fuels produce blue flame and solid fuels produce a yellow flame. They also learnt that gaseous fuel burns with a clean blue flame in a rich supply of air and with yellow flame in a limited supply of air (oxygen). They were linked to real-life examples like cooking vessels getting blackened when kept over a burning gas and the yellow colour flame of cooking gas. The topic, ‘Zones of a Flame’ was introduced with a small hands-on activity by lighting the candle. They observed different colours of the flame produced in the burning candle. They placed a plastic scale in the innermost dark zone of the candle flame and observed white wax vapour on the scale. Through this activity, they concluded that the innermost zone contains wax vapour. They learnt about the second zone of the candle by placing a steel spoon in the luminous zone and observed that spoon turned black. They concluded that the middle zone contains unburnt carbon particles that turn the spoon black. They also learnt about the non-luminous zone, the hottest zone of the flame. They listed the difference between the three types of zones in their notebooks. As the students were very keen to share their experiences they were very well connected to the chapter ‘Reaching the Age of Adolescence.’ With the help of PPTs and Videos, they understood about adolescence and puberty and that all these changes are normal at this age. They learnt about the secondary sexual characteristics and the role of hormones in the onset of puberty. They researched about the ‘Beti Bachao- Beti Badhao’ project started by the Indian government and shared their knowledge in class. With the help of diagrams and presentations, they understood the ‘Menstrual Cycle’ and also why menstruation stops during pregnancy. They were able to connect the lesson with the current changes they are undergoing as an experience in themselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jMGrfZUBBI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9gM8u08m-o&t=575s SOCIAL SCIENCEHistory: Students were explained about the painful partition of India and how the displaced people were assimilated into the Indian society. Students shared some stories of their grandparents and great-grandparents related to the partition. They were made aware of the integration of princely states with India with the help of a PPT. Interesting facts about the integration of Hyderabad, Goa were shared. Challenges faced by our government after the independence like the development of agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, industries etc. were discussed in detail. Students gained knowledge about our constitution, parliamentary democracy, equality of opportunity and special privileges for the marginalised federal form of the government, Panchayati Raj institutions reorganisation of States with the help of a PPT. They were explained India’s relationship with the world. Wars with Pakistan and China were discussed in brief. Introduction of SAARC- its relevance at present, member nations, functions and symbols was done during the lesson. The reflection exercise was done through a Nearpod Quiz. https://youtu.be/7X3veWCua-g Geography: Manufacturing Industries: The topic was introduced by discussing the term ‘Manufacturing’. Based on their previous knowledge, they shared and discussed the ‘Classification of Manufacturing Industries’. Classification based on:
With the help of a PPT, some major industries and their features were illustrated to them. Industries are:
ICTComputer Networking is a massive boon to the communication landscape. Students understood the terms Computer Network, Nodes & other peripheral devices that are linked together for sharing data & hardware resources. They gained a comparative understanding of Rail Networks as Computer Networks, Computers as Data Packets, information travelling from one node to another, Tracks as the different types of network cables used to transmit data. They also learnt about the different types of networks like PAN, LAN, MAN, WAN, and Network Topologies. The topic was concluded with live quizzes. ENGLISH“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.”- Arthur C. Clarke The learners continued to develop the concepts of “Prepositions and Conjunctions” with an interactive session about their varied usage was observed by the students. The learners found it quite interesting and grabbed the concept well. Keeping in mind “Bloom’s Taxonomy”, they were able to APPLY the use of Prepositions and Conjunctions and IDENTIFY them in their day to day conversation. The other sub-topics such as the use of since and for, prepositional phrases, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions were discussed with the help of a handout followed by the discussion of textbook exercises. The students were given an enrichment exercise and several live worksheets for extra practice. “Description begins in the writer’s imagination but should finish in the readers’.” -Stephen King The concept of a ‘Descriptive Paragraph’ was introduced with the help of an interactive session in which the students discussed the character traits of their favorite person keeping in mind the basic elements of descriptive writing. The concept was taken forward with the help of a handout in which samples of such paragraphs were discussed. After that, the students were given a task to write a descriptive paragraph keeping in mind a specific person. The learners enthusiastically presented their work. The students were assigned a reading comprehension task from the Grammar Plus book. Also, they enthusiastically participated in essay writing conducted on the theme ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ on the occasion of Republic Day.
