We reflected on our students learning by recollecting the exclusive experiences garnered during the fun-filled summer break. The month started with new learning and students continuing to enhance their knowledge by way of class discussions, videos, presentations and various class activities. The complete cycle of 1st Unit Test was conducted, doubt clearing sessions, revision, discussion of question papers, distribution of answer scripts….all completed with clockwork precision. The universal theme of the month ‘I am Honest’ was reiterated and inculcated in the Life Skill lessons and by way of stories and discussions. Chemistry The learners begin with a new chapter, Coal and Petroleum in which they classify the natural resources into exhaustible(non-renewable) and inexhaustible resources (renewable resources) of energy by recalling the names of natural resources which are available in limited quantities and can be exhausted by human activities. They learnt about the importance of natural resources in their lives and also why it is necessary to conserve natural resources by sharing their views[by integrating SDG 7 Affordable and clean energy] through group discussions in break-out rooms . They came up with wonderful ideas like reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting. They located the regions of coal mines on maps of India. Further, they also brainstormed their minds on a virtual platform through the Think, pair, and share model where they collaboratively work to research on formation and types of coal. By doing this activity they were able to conclude that they are surrounded with microorganisms. Further to enhance their knowledge the students were shown the real microscopic view of different types and shapes of bacteria through videos. The students were amazed and excited to learn how, many different types of organisms are present in pond water scum when they saw the video of a live sample of pond water scum under microscopic. With a Map Reading activity, children identified the tribal belts which are located in different states of India. Meaning of the tribe along with their different range of customs, rituals and socio –economic practices was explained with the help of a detailed PPT. The practice of Jhum cultivation was integrated with SDG 13 AND 15(Climate Action and Life on Land)and children listed the harmful impacts of this cultivation on the environment and biodiversity. A video was shown which helped children understand the impact of Colonial rule on the tribal lives. Students shared their views and suggested the reasons for adopting parliamentary system in India. Students gained knowledge about the Indian Parliament and its role. With the help of composition of the legislature:- Lok sabha, Rajya sabha. The composition of the executive was also discussed with them under the President and his/her powers like legislative, executive, financial, judicial, diplomatic and emergency. They mentioned their views and discussed the process formation, power and the role of the PM and the council of ministers Prime minister and council of ministers. Students studied about the real powers of the President with the help of a case study. Students infer about the procedure of law making in India, passing of a money bill and accountability of government with the help of a video. Students shared their views and discussed about the law making in India. They also gained knowledge about how new laws are formulated like the Right to Information Act, 2005 and how controversial laws happen. Students created a web page displaying “The impact on Land during the Covid-19 lockdown period”. They related it to the SDG Goal 15. ENGLISH“The secret of getting ahead is getting started”-Mark Twain The class interaction began with a welcome note and a story weaving activity. The students understood the points of story narration and wrote their stories with different interesting conclusion on the basis of story telling ideas from the literature section of their GK book. Discussing on the structure of a sentence, we revised the subject, helping verbs, main verb and the object and thus going on to the modal auxiliaries and their use in English language. The students learnt about the use of different modals according to different situations, like possibility, probability, past ability, request, order etc. The same was followed by note making in their notebook with the help of a PPT and a hand out. The students enjoyed attempting the exercises of their Grammar Plus Book. The students revised the syllabus for UT1 using different tools like MS Forms, Quizziz, Flip Grid and participated enthusiastically in the doubt clarification sessions. Keeping in mind the SDG Goal 15, Life on land, the concept for the poem – MILK FOR THE CAT was initiated with the help of a video related to cats and their needs for love and compassion.. The theme of the poem ’desire’ was discussed that how the desire for milk has drived the cat in the poem to the poet’s house where the creature waited patiently for the food and love. The students were able to identify the figures of speech used in the poem. On the basis of their learning , they underlined the set of words identifying the figurative language in their notebooks too. Penning down one’s day to day activities and experiences for the sake of memory or for the future records, is a favorite past time of many. The concept of Diary entry along with the instructions to follow while writing it was interestingly learnt and revised by the students. Following the format and the sample diary entry, the students were given practice questions based on SDG Goal- Life on land and a VUCA situation. By sharing a good and a bad habit, the students were brought closer to the concept of Adjectives, wherein they learnt about the describing words and their effective usage. The students were given an outline (a graphic organizer) to organize their notes beautifully and more creatively in their respective notebooks. Along with the adjectives, they also learnt about the sub topics such as similies, degrees of comparison and its application, adjectival phrases and clauses. They enhanced their application skills by attempting a quiz on quizziz.com With the conclusion of a vast topic, we began with the chapter- The New School Fellow, an extract from the MILL ON THE FLOSS. The session began with a discussion about ‘How good/excited/ worried we feel when we have a new student in our class. The students displayed immense improvement in Notes Taking Skills as was evident in their submissions. We tuned into new topics like future proche, making comparisons with adjectives and adverbs, more vocabulary related to the lesson, la valise grise. They also drew ‘Maison d’être’ to enhance the topic-past tense. All topics were taught with supportive study materials like word documents, PPT and relevant worksheets. The students participatedthrough the chat box and features like hands up identifying some expressions and vocabulary from previous topics. Various points were discussed to understand what one can do to become a socially responsible person. Another important topic, self-reliance was explained to the students. They learnt that self-reliance is a strong belief in your own capabilities to successfully deal with the challenges that life throws at you.
