“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” - Maya Angelou Nurturing November has been a month of celebrations and happiness all around. It was a time of festivities and celebrations. November has been another month of learning new concepts with the maximum participation in different activities which not only honed the skills of the students but also gave them a platform to showcase their talent. The universal theme ‘I am tolerant’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being tolerant and contented was inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions pondering over the idea of tolerance from different perspectives and understanding. They could understand the value of showing consideration and regard for others. They shared their happiness by contributing beautifully to the project ‘Spreading Smiles’ where they thought selflessly about everyone and tried to make an effort to add happiness to others’ lives too. The universal value could be easily related to the virtues like team spirit and sportsmanship as we enthusiastically took part in the Suncity Run 2.0 with great zeal and the zest. The proud Suncitizens displayed their ardour and passion by celebrating Diwali on the virtual platform integrating all five languages while sharing the significance of the festival. The beautifully integrated ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ activity as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose with a talk followed by singing the song ‘Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja’. The students commenced their morning assemblies every day with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE with a focus on current affairs and interesting articles. MATHEMATICSAlgebraic Expressions : Art integration activity for addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions During the subject integration week, students showcased their art skills in mathematics and made cut-outs of the following : 1. Squares of 1*1 m from a red and a green sheet 2. Rectangles of X*1 ( x can be any measure of their choice) from red and green sheets 3. Squares of sides x*x ( x can be any measure of their choice) from red and green sheets These cut-outs were used to represent any quadratic polynomial and ind out the addition/subtraction of algebraic expressions. A list of materials required was shared with student along with a video link 1. A scissor 2. Three red and three green-coloured A4 sheets Skills used: Creativity Analytical Skills Factorisation:- “Prior knowledge has long been considered the most important factor influencing learning and student achievement. The amount and quality of prior knowledge positively influence both knowledge acquisition and the capacity to apply higher-order cognitive problem-solving skills.” To recapitulate the concepts of factorisation, students were given several numeric numbers from algebra. In continuation with algebraic expressions and factorisation, students understood different methods of factorisation of algebraic expressions using:
SCIENCEPhysics: LEARNING BY DOING & EXPERIMENTATION Natural Phenomenon:- With the help of video and explanation, students understood the concept of lightning and its formation due to the accumulation of charges. Also, students discussed thunderstorms and their causes. They demonstrated their learning through PowerPoint presentations on the same which included:
The concept of earthquakes, their formation and their causes were integrated with Social Science. The Geography educator Mrs Preeti Soni was invited as a guest speaker. In addition, students listed the harmful effects of earthquakes and the safety measures to be followed when indoor and outdoor. Chemistry: Metals and Non-Metals The topic of Metals and Non-Metals was continued this month. Students learnt about their chemical properties and reaction with oxygen & water. They watched video tutorials followed by a discussion and a Q & A round. The reactivity series of metals was introduced to them in the form of mnemonics which they enjoyed as they learnt the names of metals easily. A peer-teaching activity was also designed where he topic reactivity Series was taken up and the same was followed by a discussions of the review questions to check their understanding. In the end, the properties of metals and non-metals were recapitulated with the help of a quiz. The students learnt about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells through ppts and videos. In the next chapter i.e. ‘Reproduction in Organisms’ students shared their knowledge about reproduction and learnt that it can be both internal and external. They learnt about human male and female reproductive organs. With the help of diagrams and videos, the students acquired knowledge about the fertilization process and the various stages of the development of the embryo. They also learnt about external fertilisation and development in some animals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EvnCzOpy2o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH1SJpg0DU8 SOCIAL SCIENCEHistory: “Our nation is like a tree of which the original trunk is Swarajya and its branches are Swadeshi and boycott.” -Bal Gangadhar Tilak November is the month that reminds us to be thankful for the festive season that uplifts our mood and brings new energy in our lives. The month started with a new topic ‘The Indian National Movement and Independence’ where students shared their views on nationalism. Important facts about the ‘Indian National Flag’ were shared with them in the Class Notebook. They recalled all the probable socio-economic and political causes which led to the emergence of nationalist feelings among the masses. A padlet link was shared where students wrote catchy slogans. Students gained knowledge about the formation of the Indian National Congress with the help of a PPT. They compared and contrasted two different wings of the congress – Moderates and Radicals in the Collaboration Space of Class Notebook. Taking learning further to an experiential mode, Partition of Bengal was explained with the help of a map reading activity. A short video on two ways of protest- Swadeshi and Boycott was shown through which the students analysed their impact on the Indian National Movement. A group discussion was held where students exhibited their learning and described how swadeshi and boycott movements can be relevant as the biggest weapons in a present-day democracy. Based on their previous knowledge, students shared different factors that affect agriculture. Students gained knowledge about types of farming- ‘Subsistence and Commercial Farming’. They also learnt the types with examples. While sharing their views about commercial farming they also learnt about extensive grain farming, mixed farming, dairy farming, market gardening, horticulture, and plantation farming with examples. Different images related to each type of farming were shown to them. Students were very excited about the chapter as the topic was integrated with the science lessons and they already came with prior knowledge. Civics: The Police and the Courts Role of the police was introduced to students as that official group of people who are employed by the state to prevent crime and maintain public order. Students gained knowledge about the process of investigation of a crime like filing an FIR the role of the public prosecutor, judge, and a fair trial. Students also asked questions and cleared their doubts. Students enthusiastically prepared, participated, and presented a skit on filing an FIR and then the role of police in preparing and filing a charge sheet. They were divided into different groups to complete their task. ICT"The only way to learn a new programming language is by writing programs in it." During the process of learning ‘Python’, the students learnt advanced coding using iterative statements in Python. They learnt the different loops like for Loop, While Loop, Infinite Loop and Loop Else. They understood that when they have to repeat one or more statements then repetition can be carried out using Loop in programming. They did programs based on a loop to ensure the implication of the loop during practical sessions. ENGLISH“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” -Brian Herbert The learners continued to Deepen their knowledge of the concept of ‘Active and Passive Voice’ with an interactive session where the way a sentence can be spoken in two different ways was observed by the students. The learners found it more It interactive nad grasped the concept well grabbed the concept well. Keeping Bloom’s taxonomy in mind, they were able to identify the same in their day to day conversations and show its application too. All the uses of – “ be, being and been” and rules to follow while changing a sentence from active to passive, special rules for interrogative and negative sentences were discussed with the help of a presentation followed by the discussion of textbook exercises. The students were given an enrichment exercise for extra practice. “All that glitters is not gold.” -William Shakespeare The students enjoyed the above theme while reading an act from Shakespeare’s ‘Merchant of Venice’. They also improved their Comprehension & Writing Skills by attempting the question answers in the notebooks. The emphasis was on understanding Reference to Context questions. “Superstition is the religion of feeble minds.”
The students were introduced to Article Writing and discussed how an article is different from a regular paragraph. They discussed the format together. The hints were given and they were guided on how to elaborate on them. The handout for the same was also shared. Students attempted to write on a topic after referring to an exemplar. They had to read an article from the local newspaper or NIE and share it during the next lesson.
